St. Agatha Family Empowerment (S.A.F.E.) was founded in 1991 by neighborhood residents, with the support of St. Agatha Catholic Church, to give families in the North Lawndale area a positive alternative to drugs, gangs, and violence. Operating five days a week, S.A.F.E. focuses on the hours of 3:00pm until 6:00pm which, according to a Justice Department study, is the most dangerous time for the young people in the inner city. S.A.F.E. also operates a seven-week summer session.
The S.A.F.E. Program offers a fourfold solution to the problems which destroy lives:
1) Employment and Job Training
2) Daily Educational Assistance
3) Leadership Empowerment
4) Self-esteem Enrichment
